When most people think of roses, they think of Valentine's Day or some other romantic occasion. It is because these flowers are considered to be the special occasion flower. They are also considered to be some of the most beautiful and sweet smelling flowers on earth. The following are some special tips every rose grower should apply once they have decided on their color or scheme of colors, the size or sizes they desire for the roses to grow and the climate conditions under which their roses will be exposed.
1) Choose the right location - roses love lots of sunlight to reach up toward and some bushes can grow high and wide.
2) The soil must be of a soft and nutritious mixture with good drainage. This is a must not an option.
3) Water your roses often, but lightly. Do not water directly on the foliage, but instead on the ball area. This will help guard against fungal diseases.
4) Mulch around your plants. This will help against weed development, diseases, and having to water so often. It will also help regulate the temperature and lock in nutrients.
5) Understand that 90% of good rose gardening is in the pruning. Roses need pruning in order to develop properly. If you fail to do this, your garden will fail. You must apply the 3 D's of pruning and that is to remove dead, damaged or diseased wood. You must also keep the limbs from becoming tangled and keep good air circulation.
6) When Pruning, use a clean and sharp pruning shear. Cut at a 45 degree angle about 1/4 above a bud that is facing toward the outside of the plant. Make sure the cut is cut clean and not ragged.
7) Remove Suckers immediatedly. This a shoot that grows off the lower bark of a grafted bush. It should be removed below the surface.
8) Plant bare root roses in late winter. Plant container roses in the early spring. It is best to avoid summer planting unless you have the time to water every day.
9) Keep on hand an insect repellant. Good roses gardens attract insects. You will have to deal with this issue.
10) Rose plants spacing vary. Hybrid Tea Roses and Grandifloras should be spaced at 30" - 36". Floribundas Roses should be spaced at 24" - 30". Shrub Roses should be spaced at 4 ft. to 8 ft. and Climber Roses should be spaced at 10' - 18' apart.
