| Every 5 years or so, it becomes necessary to re-design your firms website. This is because what was amazing in the year 2000 just doesn't cut it in the year 2010. Each year, websites look better and better. My initial checklist would be as follows:
Focus on
1. Create unique, accurate page titles
2. Make use of the "description" meta tag
3. Make your site as easy as possible to navigate
4. Focus on niche content - you want you top keywords to appear regularly in many pages on your website.
Other important factors
5. Write better anchor text for links and "alt" tags for images.
6. Use heading tags appropriately
Notes:
(a) Any top SEO company would recommend that for items 1&2, you make sure that you include the keywords in the page titles and meta tags. People see this text in the search engine results pages and use it to decide if they should click on your listing and go to your website. It _needs_ to be good.
(b) Make sure you answer all the visitors questions. All top SEO companies agree Bounce rate is becoming more and more important for SEO. I'm not a graphic design firm. I'm a top SEO company, so I'm not going to tell you how to get the bounce rate down. We work closely with graphic design firms to help us during this part of the process.
Lastly, try to keep the page layout the same. Each top SEO company that I've talked to says not to delete a page unless there is a compelling reason to do so. Don't delete any pages without setting up redirects from each old page to the new page that will replace it.
I personally recommend ensuring that your website is compatible with Adobe Contribute. This makes it easier to change. That being said, if you're a tech savvy person, and probably very capable of editing your website, then this doesn't matter. This is important for non tech savvy people who would otherwise need to spend $70+/hour to make HTML changes.
